Molecular dynamics of a dense fluid of polydisperse hard spheres

چکیده
Slow dynamics in a fluid are studied in one of the most basic systems possible: polydisperse hard spheres. Monodisperse hard spheres cannot be studied as the slow down in dynamics as the density is increased is preempted by crystallisation. As the dynamics slow they become more heterogeneous, the spread in the distances traveled by different particles in the same time increases. However, the dynamics appears to be less heterogeneous than in hardsphere-like colloids at the same volume fraction. The particles which move least far in a characteristic relaxation time and, particularly, the particles which move farthest in the same time are clustered, not randomly distributed throughout the sample. We study the dynamics at three different widths of the distribution of diameters of the hard spheres. For each width, the relaxation time is the same function of the compressibility factor, suggesting that this determines the relaxation time for hard spheres.

The stability limit of the fluid phase of polydisperse sticky spheres
It has been shown by Stell [J. Stat. Phys., 63, 1203 (1991)] that at low temperature monodisperse sticky spheres collapse to form coexisting close-packed solid and infinitely dilute gases. We show that polydisperse sticky spheres also collapse and calculate the collapse temperature. The polydisperse spheres separate into fractions with narrower polydispersities which can then solidify. This is ...
متن کاملFractionated crystallization in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres
We consider the nature of the fluid–solid phase transition in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres. For a sufficiently polydisperse mixture (s.0.085) crystallization occurs with simultaneous fractionation. At the fluid–solid boundary, a broad fluid diameter distribution is split into a number of narrower fractions, each of which then crystallize. The number of crystalline phases increases wit...
متن کاملA scaling approximation for structure factors in the integral equation theory of polydisperse nonionic colloidal fluids
The integral equation theory of pure liquids, combined with a new ‘‘scaling approximation’’ based on a corresponding states treatment of pair correlation functions, is used to evaluate approximate structure factors for colloidal fluids constituted of uncharged particles with polydispersity in size and energy parameters. Both hard sphere and Lennard-Jones interactions are considered. For polydis...
متن کاملA New Mixing Rule for Mixtures of Hard Spheres
A mixing rule for the mixtures of hard-spheres is presented which can be reduced to the standard van der Waals mixing rule at low densities. The effectiveness of the mixing rule for the size and energy parameters of lennard-Jones fluid are examined by combining them with an equation of state to calculate thermodynamic properties. The results of calculation are compared with the molecular dy...
متن کاملGlass transition of dense fluids of hard and compressible spheres.
We use computer simulations to study the glass transition of dense fluids made of polydisperse repulsive spheres. For hard particles, we vary the volume fraction, phi , and use compressible particles to explore finite temperatures, T>0 . In the hard sphere limit, our dynamic data show evidence of an avoided mode-coupling singularity near phi(MCT) is approximately 0.592; they are consistent with...
